Pendleton, Oregon was a different town for soldiers. It was far from a "soldier's town", for instance the prices were sky high, people rather distant and the Air Base being on top of a small mountain didn't help matters any. Some of the boys use to go to La Grande, Oregon or Walla Walla, Washington on pass because both were within 50 miles of Pendleton. We had one Company Party while there and it went off with a bang and what a bang!!! Had a bunch of the civilian nurses from the hospital there with a married couple a chaperons. It was held in the Veterans of Foreign War Lodge. Plenty of beer and eats for all. 2nd Lt. Banks returned from Detached Service, Camouflage School, March Field, California, to duty. Kotick (186) 35393537 12 May l943, the following named Enlisted Man transferred in grade to 482nd Base Hq & Air Base Sqs Hill Field, Ogden, Utah PP #2, Special Order 892, Hqs. 83rd Serv Gp, ASC, AAB, Pueblo, Colorado dated 11 May 1943. Pvt. Howard D. Kessler (252) 38096138 MAY 1943--Army Air Base, Pueblo, Colorado: The operation Of the different Sections was put into action shortly after arriving at AAB, Pueblo, Colorado. Class I Supply Section worked in connection with Base Commissary for sometime. Upon installation of Field Rations they operated a separate unit supplying three mess halls which fed the entire Group. Daily reports breaking down and distribution of rations was their objective and their duty in the Field. The Class III Supply Section worked in connection with the Base Gas Station until permission was given to set-up a Depot for which they operated. Daily report were maintained and a weekly report submitted to the Group Commanding Officer. The Service Center Supply Section (Class II & IV) operated from an office in one of the QM Warehouses, supplying the men of the Group. Some changes were made and amplified system installed. Above regular supplies, memorandum receipts were kept on property obtained and distributed for use in different organizations of the Group. Records and files were kept of transactions going through this office. All personnel have fired Springfield Cal. .30 on prescribed course and 50% of personnel have qualified. All personnel have fired the Carbine Cal. 30. Pueblo was another one of those "Soldier's Towns" for many various reasons. Don't believe there V8 a fellow in the outfit that liked leaving Pueblo. A fellow could go bowling, swimming, horseback riding dancing (Hotel Whitman or Arcadia) roller skating and the movies also plenty of women around and lots of bars to hang out in. We played quite a bit of basketball while there in the Y.M.C.A. in Pueblo. Most all outfit on the Base were in the league. We got to go swimming during the winter months in the pool at the Y.M.C.A. Hays, Buchanan, Seibert, Philbin, Fulton, Browning, Gentle and Sheedy played most of the time. We had our last Company Party in the States Wednesday 27 April 1943 in the Union Hall, Bessmer, Bessmer was out in the steel mill section and quite rugged too. Conway, Glorius, Seibert, McManus and Marshall were on the Committee and did a very good job, but the best part about it was they were all oiled pretty good by the time it got under way. If you want to get the inside dope ask Gentle about his marathon around the bar. There wasn't enough girls, so the boys went out on the street and invited a bunch in, so before the evening was over a good time was had by all. Was really funny getting Conway down the stairs and out to the Base, but made it for about the 100th time. Jim Gentle & Pee Wee felt at this time we had put E. J. Conway to bed 300 days out or the possible 395 days we have been in the Army to date. May 1943 -- Camp Shank, New York (Permanent Change of Station): 16 May 1943, 1141st QM Co. Serv Gp (Avn) transferred from Army Air Base, Pueblo, Colorado to Camp Shank, New York PP #2, Special Order #95, Hqs. 83rd Service Group, ASC, AAB, Pueblo, Colorado dated 14 May 1943. Four Officers and seventy-five Enlisted Men departed AAB, Pueblo, Colorado at 1000 hours via Troop Train, 16 May 1943 and arrived Camp Shank, New York at 0330 hours, 19 May 1943. Morale was excellent. Lt. Thompson and Tec 4 Kornblut have gone ahead on the advance party. Organization traveled 2029 miles. 16 May 1943, Kansas City, Mo. Organization departed AAB, Pueblo, Colorado 100 hours via Troop Train; arrived Kansas City, Mo. 2400 hours. Distance traveled 540 miles. Morale excellent. 17 May 1943, Decatur, Indiana. Left Kansas City, Mo. 0001 hours; arrived Decatur, Indiana 2400 hours. Distance traveled 654 miles. Morale excellent. 18 May 1943, Kingston, N.Y. Left Decatur, Indiana 0001 hours; arrived Kingston, N.Y. at 2400 hours. Distance traveled 805 miles. Morale excellent. 19 May 1943, Camp Shank, N.Y. Left Kingston, N.Y. at 0001 hours; arrived Camp Shank, N.Y. at 0330 hours. Distance traveled 60 miles. Morale excellent. 20 May 1943, 2nd Lt. Thompson from Detached Service, Staten Island, N.Y. to duty. Tec 4 Kornblut from Detached Service, Boston, Mass to duty. 21 May 1943, 2nd Lt. Thompson from duty to Detached Service, Staten Island, N.Y. 22 May 1943, 2nd Lt. Thompson from Detached Service, Staten Island, N.Y. to duty. The final physical inspection was given Officers and Enlisted Men by Medical Officers of Camp Shank, New York and notification in writing to that affect was given the Company Commander. It wasn't much of an inspection and if a guy was thinking of getting on Limited Service with that inspection they wouldn't have a chance cause ran us through like a bunch of sheep. Didn't take over five minutes for the whole outfit to go through. From 19 May to 22 May 1943, organization was inspected by Inspecting Officers of Camp Shank to determine status of equipment and records. Our Company was well equipped before landing there and didn't have much to do. That is one reason why we were shipped out as soon as we were. The few items that we were short were requisitioned and acquired before departing. It did work Salvo, Marshall, Conway, Fulton and Gentle the day and night before we left. We had the Company Records inspected at Headquarters before leaving and they were found in order. Organization was alerted a few hours after arriving at Camp Shank so that meant no passes to New York for some night life. It would have been fun to get into New York and all the boys were anxious to go, but no soap. Camp Shank wasn't so good as an Army Camp because of its size and the number of men on it. Had more women working on this Post than we had soldiers on the Air Base at Pueblo. They did have a couple of nice Service Clubs where you could get a good steak and that is what most of the boys did the night before we left. The afternoon before we left most everyone ate a quart of ice cream because no one knew when they would get any again. T/Sgt. Marshall and Cpl. Marrello would liked to have gotten out because lived very near Camp Shank, but the best advice for them is to take their TS slips to the Chaplain. May 1943 -- Overseas Duty (0001 hours, 23 May 1943); The following named Officers (5) and Enlisted Men (76) departed Camp Shank, New York at 2135 hours via train and arrived P.O.E. at 0030 hours, 23 May 1943. Boarded ferry for Staten Island at 035 hours, 23 May 1943 and boarded the S.S. Mariposa at 0100 hours, 23 May 1943. It was a really funny feeling going through the POE, with the band playing and a few people standing around watching. They rushed us through so fast though, that it didn't give us too much time to know what was going on around us. The Red Cross women were there to give us coffee, doughnuts, cigarettes, gum, etc. Capt. Emmett G. Scharding O-299027 1st Lt. Edward L. Banks O-1575710 2nd Lt. Harold H. Krinke O-1574921 2nd Lt. Mariposa at 0730 hours. 24 May to 31 May 1943, Traveling aboard the S.S. Mariposa for foreign service. Until we landed in England there was every kind of rumor about where we were going. The Mariposa was a good ship and in it's peace time days would have been nice to travel on, but right now it is carrying twice its normal capacity. We slept in shifts, half the Company on B deck for 12 hours and the other half on E deck in staterooms. Food was fairly good if there wouldn't have been so much noise and they were always hurrying us along. Most of the boys were surprised when we left without being in a convoy or at least having an escort. All the way over we looked for "friendly" aircraft and enemy subs. You could always find some of the boys up on the deck looking out across the water for a little "tube" sticking out of the water, but didn't see any. Salvo and Alexander were the only two that got real seasick, but quite a few of the other boys would get that way once in a while. "Available" sure wasn't available during this trip. June 1943 -- Overseas Duty, Station 167, Ridgewell: 1 June 1943, five Officers and seventy-six Enlisted Men debarked from troop transport S.S. Mariposa at 1830 hours, Liverpool, England. Had to march form the dock to the railroad station with full pack, rifle, etc. Our first look at England was rather bad, because right down around the docks is where they got hit from the Blitz the most. Boarded train for Station 167, Ridgewell at 2030 hours. Arrived at Station 167 at 0600 hours 2 June 1943. It took 8 days and 18 hours to cross the big pond. 2 June 1943, 2nd Lt. Thompson transferred to Hqs, IV Bomber Wing, Marks Hall per VOGG, IV Bomber Wing. Things were much different than we had anticipated over here and before we could even get settled they took one of our Officers out of the Company and gave us warning that we would have to send one Officer and 20 Enlisted Men on Detached Service to another station nearby. 3 June 1943, the following named Officer and Enlisted Men form duty to Detached Service, Station 150, Boxted per VOGG, Hqs, IV Bomber Wing, Marks Hall and traveled via motor convoy. They only gave us one 2½ ton truck for the 20 men and one officer, so was really crowded with all the baggage. Packed in like sardines for sure. 2nd Lt. Jerry J.
