Target: The Me-109 factory at Regensburg, Germany
Base: Thorpe Abbotts, Norfolk, England
Crash: At 1020 hours a swarm of fighters attacked the low squadron over eastern Belgium and so severly damaged the aircraft that the pilot, Roy F. Claytor, sounded the bail out alarm. Eight of the men aboard got out safely, but Edward A. Musante's chute caught on the horizonal stablizer and when the plane exploded in mid-air or crashed he was killed. William M. Hinton, who was flying in place of Robert H. Wussow, apparently did not bail out. It is thought he stayed too long to assist Musante and this gallant action resulted in his death. Both Hinton and Musante were given full Military Funerals by the Luftwaffe and were buried 20 Aug 43 on the Airdrome At St. Trond with a Luftwaffe Chaplain officiating. Hinton's grave number is #287 and Musante's is #268
