Oakes reported that after bombs away, hit by enemy fighters on the No#3 engine caused severe damage and resulted in the loss of engine oil, this or subsequent attacks also damaged No#2 engine and the decision was made to try for Switzerland when it became obvious they could not continue with the formation. A landing was made gear up at the nearest Swiss airfield.
