Database Search

You are in the database section of the website.

Select a record category from RECORDS above. When you have selected a category, you will see search options for that category above the record list.

Most fields require at least three characters. When you submit your query, the search engine will return all records that contain your search term.

Note that when searching for an aircraft serial number, you must enter the full serial number without the leading "4" and without a dash in the Aircraft SN search field. For example, you would enter 42-37772 as 237772.

The Personnel name field searches both last and first names, so if you enter the search term, "Russ", the search engine will return both Russell Abel and James Russell.

You narrow the search by entering more characters into the search field. For example, "Russ" returns many hits. "Russell" returns fewer hits. The same principle applies to all queries.

The POW and KIA categories are list only and are not searchable.

Crew PILOT: Walter E.  BAILEY

You mentioned that you were looking for a Crew photo for the Bailey Crew. The back of this one is labelled "Crew picture at Canyon Lake outing" and is dated June, 1944. There's a stamp on the back indicating that the photo was processed at Becker's Camera Shop in Rapid City S. Dakota on June 19, 1944. I believe that the Canyon Lake in the photo is in Texas, since there's a Canyon Lake near San Marcos, TX where I know my father did part of his training.

Here's the catch. I'm not entirely sure that this is actually the Bailey Crew. As I recall, my father told us that shortly before he was deployed, he was reassigned to another crew (did most crews go through training together?). Apparently the crew that was scheduled to deploy just before my father's crew lost their navigator to a broken leg (baseball game), so my father was reassigned to that crew. Sadly, his original crew was later shot down.

So I'm not sure whether this photo represents his original crew or the reassigned crew. I've tried to compare the faces in this photo to the one of First Officer Sees that I previously sent, and I do see some resemblance to the crewman standing fourth from the left, but I'm just not sure. Let me know if you're able to find out more.

Walter Bailey is third from the right sitting on the ground. William Merchen is copilot on the right of Bailey. Henry Sees is bombardier on the very right. Standing on the very right is Calvin Dollar who wrote the journal on the crew page.
