The Personnel name field searches both last and first names, so if you enter the search term, "Russ", the search engine will return both Russell Abel and James Russell.

You narrow the search by entering more characters into the search field. For example, "Russ" returns many hits. "Russell" returns fewer hits. The same principle applies to all queries.

The POW and KIA categories are list only and are not searchable.

CREW

On September 10, 1944, Capt. Woodrow W. "Woody" McGill flew with Major Rosenthal as lead Navigator.  The A/C was shot down and crash landed in recently liberated France.  French Farmers picked up the crew and got them to a road where the Red Cross picked them up. Louis Quijada flew WG position and Bill Terminello was Pilot.

AFTER 9 MISSIONS THIS CREW ASSIGNED TO LEAD CREW TRAINING.  2ND LT JOSEPH TRAPNELL WAS ASSIGNED HIS OWN CREW AND WE LOST TWO GUNNERS (SGT HANSER AND SGT JONES) TO MAKE ROOM FOR A FORMATION OFFICER AND A RADAR OPERATOR (MICKEY).  SGT PALMER AND SGT HARTOS BECAME WAIST GUNNERS ON THE LEAD CREW.   

"AS A PATHFINDER (PFF) CREW, WE WERE STATIONED AT HORHAM (HOME OF THE 95TH BG AND 13TH COMBAT WING HQ).  HORHAM WAS THE ONLY BASE EQUIPPED TO SERVICE THE RADAR EQUIPMENT IN THE 13TH CBW.  ON A MISSION DAY, WE WOULD HAVE TO GET UP EARLY, FLY OVER TO THORPE ABBOTTS, FLY THE MISSION, GO THROUGH DEBRIEFING AND THEN FLY BACK TO HORHAM. I am new to this forum. My name is David McGill and I am the youngest son of Capt. McGill who served in the 100th as the Group Navigator. Not sure when he first was transferred to the 100th, but his tenure as Group navigator ended when he was injured in the crash landing on 10 Sep 44 of the B-17 commanded by "Rosie" Rosenthal. It was his 13th combat mission. As Group Navigator, he only flew when the 100th lead the whole mission. Even though his only injury was a broken leg, it was a severe compound fracture and he ended up with his leg in a cast for 3 years (long story there). 
His account of that incident, as I remember it, is as follows. I don't know details as to exactly where the mission was headed, but it was supposed to be a "Milk Run"… what they called missions where there was not expected to be much resistance in the way of flak or fighters. After dropping their bombs, they started to return to England on much the same route as they had come. Apparently, AAA had been moved into position on barges on a river. They were hit and started to lose power and altitude. The pilot (Rosenthal?) ordered everything that wasn't nailed down jettisoned to make the plane lighter and so make it further towards home. As they lost more altitude and it seemed they would have to land, a clear field was selected and the landing attempted. The plane being much lighter than usual, the clear field was over shot. Upon landing, the plane entered a wooded area and mowed down many trees before striking a creek bank or dyke. As my father told it, after the plane came to a rest, he was about the only one conscious. On impact, his leg flew up and hit the brace for the top turret, snapping it cleanly at the top of his flight boot. Shortly he noticed some French farmers approaching the plane smoking cigarettes. He said the gas fumes were so thick he could hardly breathe and he feared a fire. He did not know French, but he did know a little Spanish, so he yelled out "No Fumar!" They got the message and extinguished their cigarettes. They started getting the men out of the plane. My father said that when they started to drag him out of the plane, he could see his leg flopping around as if there was another joint in the middle of his lower left leg. This caused extreme pain and he passed out. When he came to, he was being loaded onto an old truck (Model T) which had no fuel and so was being drawn by a mule. The whole crew was eventual returned to England. The longest any of the others were out of action was 6 weeks. And as mentioned above, my father had his leg in a cast for 3 years. 

Anyway, I just wanted to say hello to everyone. Also, if anyone here has any knowledge of incidents involving my father, I would love to hear them. There are a few stories that he told me that I would love to corroborate. He died in '95 so I can't reconfirm the stories he told when I was younger. One in particular (besides the crash) that has always stood out in my mind is of a particular mission that was saved by a mysterious lone P-51. On the way to their intended target on this mission, they spotted a formation of German fighters about to pounce on them. As they watched them tensely, waiting for them to make their move, one of them suddenly burst into flames. A lone P-51 had gotten the jump on them. He came in on their 6 from high above. After shooting the first one down as he passed through their formation, he pulled up and got another as he came up from below. The rest scattered and never fired a shot at the planes of the 100th. Upon returning to England, my father said he tried in vain to find out who that pilot was so he could at least buy him a drink if not a whole bottle. He was never able to find out who it was.
