Richard Flagg Richard: Yes, during the Winter 1944-45 in England the weather sometimes was like that shown in the photo. Regarding "flying in it" it is important to know that there were many times when we took off the weather was "flyable" but when we returned to base 8-9 hours later the weather had become very marginal. At Thorpe Abbotts we were fortunate to have an excellent ILS system that enabled us to return and land in weather much like that shown. The main E-W runway at TA was 6,000 ft long with overruns at each end and was lined on each side with high intensity Yellow lights runway lights. John Alden Clark
