The following is quoted from a letter written by E.F.Neu dated 23 July 1945…pw

"……..we were flying in the low squadron numbering twelve aircraft of which 11 were shot down. Our ship was badly hit and on fire. Lt Carlton, who was flying in the right seat suffered wounds on the right side of his face and head. Lt. Carlton had his chute fastened to his harness the last time I saw him. While I was trying to move the Engineer's (Bagdasian) body from the escape hatch the ship exploded and I came to on the ground. Due to the fire in the bomb bay no one from the front of the ship could go to the rear, also the inter phone was shot out so no communications in the ship was possible.

Lt. Carlton's wounds seemed to be serious from the way he was bleeding. S/Sgt Schaefer and Watrous were in the rear of the ship and due to fire and no inter phone we could not communicate with them, although they were ordered by Lt. Carlton and myself to leave the ship before out inter phone was shot out."

Michael,

Dad told me that he was to rotate back to the states after this mission - his 25th. He also told me that they anticipated the target for the twelve bombers would be a milk run. He said they were hit by 77 enemy aircraft.

I think he told me the B-17 he piloted was named "Shoo Shoo Baby" - any idea what happened to it after dad was shot down.

We have some of his prisoner of war papers, camp rules, photo and the like. This gives me some incentive to go back through the family photos from the war years to see if there is anything of interest.

Is it possible he was trying to beat the change from 25 to 35 missions? Knowing dad it could have been anything that put him in the copilot seat, maybe "Shoo Shoo Baby" couldn't fly that day and the 350th needed a copilot. He would volunteer for something like that.

I only met a few of the men from the 100th and that was 35 years ago. One was an engineer from Indianapolis named Sullivan. I did have the good fortune to know and develop a fine friendship with the Chaplain, Fr. Alloysious Phillips. When he and dad spoke of the war it was more about the social aspects and not the combat.

After the war dad spent 18 months at Walter Reed Hospital getting put back together. Somehow he managed to get back in the air during Korea flying out of Japan and he came very closed to being killed again. He told mom that it was an orders snafu that sent him to Japan. I think he volunteered. He was a great guy, good and honest man, and a wonderful father. When I hear the discussions about the "Greatest Generation" for me its so real because I grew up with a first rate member.

If I find some good stuff I'll get it to you. I have a very good computer imaging system so I get deliver digital.

Keith Neu

"I am the youngest son of D.A.Armstrong and have been busy trying to compile my Fathers war years. He arrived at Thorpe-Abbott on July 30,1944.According to letter of recommendation signed by major Edward D. Wooten dated April 3,1945. "After completion of 6th mission checked out as Element Lead and flew 2 missions as such. The remainder of his missions were flown as; 10 Squadron Leads and 15 High Flight Leads." Dad completed 33 bombing missions some as a Command Pilot. After tour was finished he became 418th Assistant Squadron Operations Officer for a period of 3 months.Freddrick J. Sutterlin wrote "Captain Armstrong has a excellent record as a pilot of B-17 aircraft and served as Assistant Operations Officer and was equally effective", dated March 27,1945. I was named for Lt. Colonel Thomas S. Jeffries and have just recently spoke to him,my childhood hero, he became atleast a 2-Star General. Dad flew P51's and A-26's in addition to these other activities. Anyone with any info. on him would be deeply appreciated!! Will be joining your group as soon as my 2 daughters college tutions can be met.God Bless You and God Bless America, you are all the type of men I hope my son,David Andrew Armstrong will grow up to be."
