Edmund Carr Settle Sr.
Edmund Carr Settle Sr., 86, of South Charleston died Sunday, October 3, 2010, in Hubbard Hospice House.
Mr. Settle was born November 21, 1923, in Fayetteville. His father died when he was 2 years old and he was raised by his mother, Marguerite Grafton Settle, and his grandmother, Alice Daniel Grafton.
He graduated from Fayetteville High School, where he excelled in sports. He then enrolled at Concord College while simultaneously maintaining jobs to pay his way.
Soon afterward, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, entered officer school, and reached the rank of first lieutenant. He served as a bombardier in the "Bloody 100th" bomb group, based in England. There, he saw extensive air combat and was awarded the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters as well as three Combat Battle Stars.
After the end of WWII, Mr. Settle worked and attended Concord College, Marshall College, and Morris Harvey College, graduating with a B.S. in chemistry. He became a successful salesman and then founded and ran Ethical Drug Company, which prospered for more than 28 years. His work ethic and energy were such that he also established two other businesses during his career.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of South Charleston for more than 50 years. Mr. Settle was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Shrine. He belonged to the Fayetteville Lodge for 52 years.
Carr was a warm and loyal friend and maintained many close friendships throughout his life. He was a generous father who supported and gave unsparingly to his two children. In later years, he was an attentive, engaged and loving grandfather.
He was married for 63 years to his wife, Sue Crookshanks Settle, with whom he had a relationship of unlimited love and constant mutual support. They were inseparable and a lifelong team.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Sue; daughter, Susan A. Settle; son Dr. Edmund C. Settle Jr. and his wife, Kimberly; and three grandsons, Judson, Harrison, and Austin Settle. He is also survived by numerous cousins and extended family members.
The family wishes to thank both Charleston Gardens and Hubbard Hospice House for their care and professionalism.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 7, at Fayetteville United Methodist Church, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Clare Sulgit-Horn officiating. Burial will follow at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 149.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church.
Online condolences and other information are available at www.doddpaynehessfuneralhome.com.
Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, 350 W. Maple Ave., Fayetteville, will be assisting the family.
