Crash: This accident with 'run-away guns' occurred at Thorpe Abbots on the afternoon of 11 Jul 44, shortly after a fairly un-eventful mission to Munich. Fortress '007' was parked on its dispersal near the control tower; the crew had vacated the aircraft. The Ball Turret Gunner was underneath cleaning the guns. Suddenly one of the guns began to fire, sweeping the area as the turret swung from the recoil causing all to fling themselves flat on the ground. The firing did not cease until the gun had consumed two hundred and seven rounds. The BTG, SSgt Homer L. Parish was killed as he tried to run to safety. Three other B-17's were damaged. One hit by a tracer in the wing starting a fire. This aircraft flew again. SSgt Parish was buried in Cambridge (M-3-12) and returned to the USA after the war.
