Target: Sottevast, France
Base: Thorpe Abbotts, Norfolk, England
Crash: Hit by flak on the second pass over the target on the ill fated Sottevast mission with Colonel Robert N. Kelly leading. Direct flak hit started un-controllable fires that resulted in the aircraft losing a wing and exploding in mid-air. Some of the Survivors were literally blown out of the aircraft. Most of the wreckage was found in the Cherbourg area. Those killed were buried by the Germans in the English Cemetery at Cherbourg. In May 1945 they were moved to the US Military Cemetery at Blosville, France.
