AUGUST 5, 1944, T/SGTS A. M. PACHA, D. A. SHEARTER, D. F. SUDDOCK, R. N. HORRIGAN, S/SGTS; B. A. COATS, L. H. HEIMERMAN, R. T. JOHNSON, E. F. LUDWIG, F. MARTINI, L. O’MASTERS, S.K.PAXTON, L.V. PELLETIER, L.J. REYNOLDS, T. G. RICHEY, E. W. RITTER, E.L. YALLE, L. R. WATSON, W. J. WILLIAMS, AND SGTS. C.L BOWEN, F.L FRIEL, C. W. ROBINSON, B. F. SHARE, G. W. SCOTT, P. J. WILSON, AND J. E. LEISER WERE CAPTURED BY THE GESTAPO IN PARIS FRANCE. ALL HAD SPENT SEVERAL WEEKS IN FRANCE SINCE THEY HAD BEEN SHOT DOWN WITH THE UNDERGROUND. THEY WERE CAPTURED EN ROUTE OUT OF THE COUNTRY. THE GENERAL IMPRESSION IS THAT THEY WERE BETRAYED BY A GESTAPO OR FELD POLEZI AGENT WORKING IN THE UNDERGROUND MOVEMENT

SINCE ALL THESE SGTS. WERE WEARING CIVILIAN CLOTHES WHEN CAPTURED, THEY WERE SENT IMMEDIATELY TO FRENNES POLITICAL PRISON WHERE THEY WERE DETAINED TILL AUGUST 15, 1944. THIS PRISON WAS THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE GESTAPO AND FELD POLEZI AGENTS OPERATING IN THE SECTOR OF FRANCE. ALL PERSONS SUSPECTED OF SABOTAGE, ESPIONAGE, OR OTHER WISE SUSPECTED OF ACTIVITY IN OPPOSITION TO THE GERMAN MILITARY GOVERNMENT IN FRANCE WERE INTERNED THERE.

THIS TREATMENT IN THIS PRISON WAS MORE HUMANE THAN MIGHT BE EXPECTED, THEY WERE NOT BEATEN OR TORTURED IN ANY WAY. THEY WERE ASKED ONLY THE USUAL QUESTIONS, WHAT WAS YOUR SQUADRON, GROUP NUMBER, WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHERE WERE YOU SHOT DOWN? YOU ARE SPIES! YOU WILL BE SHOT! ANSWER MY QUESTIONS? WHERE ARE YOUR UNIFORMS? WHY DO YOU FIGHT US? WHAT IS YOUR NAME? RANK? SERIAL NUMBER? WHERE WERE YOU BORN? ARE YOU MARRIED? WHAT IS YOUR PERMANENT ADDRESS? AFTER ALL THESE QUESTIONS, THEY WERE REMOVED FROM FENNES PRISON.

AUGUST 15, 44, THEY WERE PACKED IN BOX-CAR WITH SOME 2000 FRENCHMEN. THE ALLIES WERE BOMBING CLOSE TO THE CITY. ARTILLERY FIRE COULD BE HEARD. THEY WERE TOLD TO BE QUIET AND NOT STICK THEIR HEARS OUT OF THE WINDOWS. NO ONE HAD ANY IDEAL OF THE DESTINATION. THE TRAIN STOPPED OFTEN, FRENCH PATRIOTS FIRED ON. THE GERMAN BRIDGES WERE OUT, RAILED WERE DESTROYED. ALL HAD BEEN REPAIRED IN ADVANCE. FRENCH EXPECTED THE ALLIES TO FORCE THE GERMANS TO CAPITULATE AT ANY MOMENT.

ON THE SECOND DAY THE TRAIN STOPPED, BEAT OFF FRENCH PATRIOTS WHICH HAD FIRED ON THE TRAIN. ONE YOUNG FRENCHMAN PEEKED OUT A WINDOW. THE GERMANS FIRED INTO THE BOX-CAR. THE FRENCH YOUTH WAS HIT IN THE HAND. HE WITHDREW FROM THE WINDOW TO NURSE HIS HAND. A FEW MOMENTS LATER, THE FIRING CEASED. THE PATRIOTS BEATEN OFF, THE BOX-CAR DOOR WAS OPENED AND THE GERMANS ASKED ABOUT THE FRENCH YOUTH. THE YOUTH CAME FORWARD EXPECTING FIRST AID. THE YOUTH WAS MARCHED PAST THE TRACKS A SHORT DISTANCE AND SHOTS WERE HEARD. THE FRENCH YOUTH WAS DEAD AND SEVEN OF THE FRENCHMEN WERE FORCED TO BURY THE BODY IN A SHALLOW GRAVE BESIDE THE TRACK.

FIVE DAYS LATER, THE ENTIRE PARTY WAS UNLOADED AT KONEENTRADON LAGER BUCKENWALD, POLITICAL CAMP, NORTH-WEST OF B. WEIMXR, GERMANY.

THE FOLLOWING NARRATIVE IS A SUMMARY OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CAMP…………….

THROUGHOUT THEIR STAY IN THE CAMP, THE SGTS. WERE APPROACHED BY CONTINGENTS OF THESE OPPOSING GROUPS, SE RING THEIR FAVOR FOR USE AT THE END OF THE WAR: CONSEQUENTLY IT WAS FELT THAT THE WISEST POLICY WAS TO OFFER HELP TO NO ONE, AS A K RESULT OF THIS POLICY, THE SGTS. LISTENED TO ALL, BUT OFFERED OPINIONS AND ADVICE TO NONE. MUCH OF THIS INFORMATION IN THIS NARRATIVE WAS OBTAINED BY RITTER, WHO COULD SPEAK POLISH. THERE BEING MANY POLISH POLITICAL PRISONERS WHO DESIRED TO SPEAK TO THE SON OF POLISH EMIGRANTS IN AMERICA.

FEAR WAS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE CAMP; THE COMMUNIST GROUP FEARED THE NON- COMMUNIST: THOSE INDIFFERENT FEAR BOTH GROUPS AND ALL FEARED THE SS GUARDS FOR THEY HAVE FOSTERED BITTERNESS AND HATRED AMONG THE PRISONERS, TO SERVE THEIR OWN ENDS, THEY HAVE USED THE PREDACIOUS OF NATIONALITY TO CREATE DISUNITY; THEY HAVE MERCILESS KILLED PRISONERS ON THE SLIGHTEST PROVOCATION; THEY HAVE OPENLY PERMITTED MURDER IN THE CAMP; AND FINALLY THEY HAVE MADE SPORT OF PHYSICAL SUFFERING PERPETUATING MENTAL ANGUISH SEEMINGLY WITH END.

PRIOR TO ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS OF THE THIRD REICH WERE INTERNED IN JAIL AND, PENITENTIARIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY, EVCKENWALD AT THAT TIME SANITARIUM WIDELY ADVERTISED AND WELL KNOWN IN GERMANY.

IN 1938 HOWEVER, HEINRICH HIMMLER, MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR, CONVERSED THIS SANITARIUM INTO AN EXPERIENTIAL PRISON. AUTOMATIC RIFLES, AMMUNITION AND A SCREW FACTORY WERE BUILT OUTSIDE THE FENCE. RELIGIOUS AND COMMUNISTIC, AND OTHER PRISONERS WHO’S LIBERTY WAS CONSIDERED DANGEROUS TO THE REICH WERE PICKED AND COLLECTED FROM THE JAIL THROUGHOUT BERLIN AND TRANSPORTED TO BUCKENWALD, THE FIRST POLITICAL PRISON TO EXIST IN GE _ NY IN THIS AREA.

IN 1939, WHEN GERMANY INVADED POLAND, AND LATER SHE INVADED RUSSIA AND FRANCE, CITIZENS CONSIDERED POLITICAL DANGEROUS WERE SENT TO BVCKENWALD. RECENTLY, CITIZENS TAKEN IN OCCUPIED COUNTRIES FOR UNDERGROUND ACTIVITY HAVE BEEN INTERNED AT BUCKENWALD. FROM A FEW HUNDRED MURDERED IN 1937 UNTIL TODAY, IT HAS REACHED A TOTAL OF THOUSANDS, FROM THIRTY TO EIGHTY THOUSAND AT THE PRESENT TIME.

TWENTY-SIX DIFFERENT NATIONALITIES ARE NOW REPRESENTED THERE, INCLUDING CITIZENS OF NEGROES FROM SOUTH AMERICA, SOUTH AFRICA, GREECE, RUSSIA, POLAND, LUTANIANS, ESTENIA, LATVIA, ITALY, FRANCE, HUNGARY, UNITED STATES, BELGIUM, DENMARK, NORWAY, LUXEMBOURG, ENGLAND, CANADA, MEXICO, BULGARIA, YUGOSLAVIA, MWMNVIA, HOLLAND AND EGYPT. THE ENTIRE CAMP IS CONFINED TO AN AREA OF FOUR HUNDRED BY FIVE HUNDRED YARDS. IT IS SURROUNDED BY TWO BARBED-WIRE FENCES. BETWEEN THE FENCES ARE BARBED-WIRE ENTANGLEMENTS THREE FEET DEEP. THE INNER MOST FENCE IS ELECTRICALLY CHARGED. INSIDE THIS INNER FENCE, A DISTANT OF THIRTY FEET, IS A CONCENTRIC WOODEN RAIL; THE CAMP, WITHIN THE WOODEN RAIL, IS DIVIDED INTO THREE PARTS: MAIN, ISOLATION AND TRANSITION LAGER, RESPECTIVELY- EACH ENCIRCLED WITH BARBED-WIRE.

OF THE SEVENTY-FOUR BARRACKS IN THE CAMP, EIGHT ARE HOSPITAL QUARTERS AND EIGHT ADDITIONAL, ENCLOSED IN BARBED-WIRE ARE FOR MEDICAL EXPERIMENTAL ISOLATED PRISONERS; FOUR STORE CLOTHING, ONE A CATTEN, ONE A SHOWER HOUSE, ONE A CREMATORY AND ONE A THEATER. THE RAMITION LAGER CONTAINS SEVEN BARRACKS, TWO OF WHICH ARE ISOLATED- THE FIVE HOUSING THREE THOUSAND PRISONERS. EACH BARRACKS HOUSES CONSTANTLY BETWEEN 625 AND 1,666 PRISONERS, WHO SLEEP ON FOUR TIERS OR WOODEN SHELVES; EACH SHELVE IS A BED FOR FIVE MEN WHO SLEEP SIDE BY SIDE WITH ONLY ONE BLANKET FOR COVER. THOSE CONFINED TO THE TRANSITION LAGER ARE WITHIN A BARBED-WIRE ENCLOSURE, FIFTY BY 250 YARDS.

THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE CAMP EXTENDS FROM HEINRICH HIMMLER, MINSTER OF THE INTERIOR DIRECTLY TO THE CAMP COMMANDANT AND FROM THE COMMANDANT OF THE LAGER FUERHERS. ALL OF THESE ADMINISTRATORS ARE MEMBERS OF THE ARMED S S AND WEAR A UNIFORM OF THAT OF THE WHERMACHT, THE COAT HAS A BLACK EPAULETS WITH RED BORDER, AND SS AND CROSS-BONES ON THE COLLAR; THE DECORATION OF THE HAT IS A SKELETON AND CROSS-BONES, THE NAZI EAGLE SS WORN ON THE LEFT ARM.

THE SENIOR OFFICER, OR LARGER ALTEGTAR IS THE BUPREEAT LAGER OF PRISONERS AS FAR INTERNAL POLICY EXTENDS; UNDER HIM ARE BLOCK KOMMANDANTS AND ALIESTERS, ERNYSLATORS, DOCTORS IN THE HOSPITAL, COOKS, HOSPITAL ATTENDANTS AND LASERCHUTES WHO SERVE AS CAMP POLICE. THESE PRISON OFFICERS ASSIST CARRYING OUT CAMP ORDERS. MOST OF THEM ARE LONG TERM COMMUNIST PRISONERS LIKE, MAX 34CH, BLOCK ALTESTER, GERMANY COMMUNIST FOR ELEVEN YEARS.

A GREAT NUMBER OF THESE GUARDS ARE VOLUNTEERS FROM GROUPS OF UKRAINIAN RUSSIANS, POLES, AND GERMAN CRIMINAL PRISONERS.
