| "Just as bombs were released A/C #564 received a direct hit by AA between #2 engine and the fuselage. Shell did not explode but a large hole was torn in the wing and fuel poured out from the tank. The #2 engine was seen feathered and the A/C pulled out of formation and directed the deputy leader to take over. A/C fell astern of the formation and escorted by fighters. It was reported #564 was heard to tell the fighters he was ok." This is all the information revealed by the 100th "A" Group crews. From Bottisham (fighter base) to PFF War room to 100th BG the following report was received: "A/C #564 called for fighter support after it began to lag and contact was made on Channel "C" with the fighters who provided cover. Subsequently the PFF crashed landed near Louvain - east of Brussels and as pre-arranged on Channel "C" as soon as the crew was clear of the A/C fighters strafed #564, setting fire to the ship. While the fighters did not see the PFF aircraft explode they stated definitely it was afire and that all of the crew were safe. | ||
