A/C #783, Lt. Harte’s, was hit when attacked by fighters at 1905 hours near Rally Point (5131-0758). Number 3 engine was damaged. Saw about 8 chutes. This ship followed quite a ways back. (Lt.R. D. Horne) Saw Lt. Harte jettisoning everything he could at 1926 hours near 5027-0700 E. We saw him at 2017 hours near 5444-0413 E., still coming. (Lt. I. R. Morgan)
This was the ninth mission for this crew, first being made on 18 Mar 44 to Augsburg. It appears that on 22 Apr 44, fighters damaged this A/C, particularly #3 engine, and it began to lag. Witnesses saw the crew attempting to jettison equipment from a/c. It appears that all ten men did bail out although Sgt. McDonald was badly wounded before leaving the ship. Some of the crew felt that Lt Harte & Lt Conley may have been killed by German civilians or soldiers after they landed.
