He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps from September 1942 until October 1945, when he received an honorable discharge at the rank of corporal. He served with the 350th Bombardment Squadron 100th Bombardment Group as an airplane and engine mechanic in the Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland. He earned the Distinguished Unit Badge with one oak leaf cluster.
