He was from Somerset, PA.
He was a Sgt. With the 418th loading bombs in the belly of the B-17s. He was my Great Uncle and My hero. He inspired me to service my country in the Navy for 13yrs. Also two of his grandchildren are now on active duty.He had six children, 12 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.While in service during WW II he was awarded the Distinguished Unit Badge with one Oakleaf Cluster and the Service Medal with six Bronze Stars. He was also a life member of the VFW Post 554.

Here are 2 pictures of my grandfather SGT George "Barney" R. Howard with the
418th Squadron. I don't know any of the other people, but my grandfater is
the last one kneeling (from left) in the group photo and he's the one bent
over the bomb in the other photo (Middle on right). I'm not sure when the
pics were taken, but I'm pretty sure it was when he was with the 100th Bomb
Group, 418th Squadron. He made it to the rank of SGT before getting out.
