"Zip" Myers, Master Sgt and the Crew Chief of Hard Luck, was rightly proud of the fortress's record and would not tolorate inexperienced pilots at her control if he possibly could avoid it.
"Hard Luck" sat a maintenance record for B-17 Fs by flying 50 missions (630 hours) without an engine change. Her original engines were made by Studebaker. In May 1944 the engines were changed, although one was re-installed after modification. Back on operations "Hard Luck" flew eleven more missions before going down on her 62nd. This B-17F delivered 249,810 lbs of bombs in 366 days with the 100th.
