Birthplace: Arnegard, North Dakota
Interment in Sunset Memorial Garden with military honors by the Lewis and Clark Veterans Council.
James D. Shirley graduated from Arnegard High School in 1937 and attended Jamestown College receiving a bachelor of arts degree. He then attended Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, Colorado. James served with the North Dakota National Guard 1937-1943. He then joined the Army Air Corps in November 1943 and was discharged in 1946 as a captain. After his discharge from active duty, he joined the Air Force Reserves, being promoted to major.
