My father worked on B-17s at Thorpe Abbotts. He was not on the flight crews (to my knowledge). I'm really looking for some information regarding the planes he might have worked on but do not know where to go to get any records.



We no longer have his DD-214. His name was Joseph Willard Smith. His DOB was 05/02/1914. He died January 11, 1981. He did have a subscription to Splasher Six sometime between 1975 - 1980. I can provide his SSN if needed, but I do not know what his serial number would have been.



Any help or direction you can prvide would be much appreciated.

QUESTION - DAD IS LISTED AS 350 BS ENGINEERING AND WAS ON STATION FOR THE DURATION.  DO THE RECORDS INDICATE WHEN HE ARRIVED ON STATION AT THORPE ABBOTTS?

 

ITS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT HE WAS A CREW CHIEF OR ASST CREW CHIEF ON B-17s.  ANYWAY OF DETERMINING HIS EXACT JOB DESCRIPTION...ENGINES, ACFT FRAME, ETC?

 

HE STAYED IN AFTER THE WAR AND DID RECRUITING, CREW CHIEF ON B-29s, B-47s.  HE RETIRED IN AUG 61.
