Philip H. Lipstate, Jr. Naples, FL 



Philip Harry Lipstate Jr. passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 4, 2013 at the age of 93. 



He was born on December 4, 1919 in Tyler, TX to the late Harry and Gertrude (Faber) Lipstate. 



Phil is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Prince); two brothers, John Lipstate (Edwena) of Montgomery, TX and Eugene (JoAnn) Lipstate of La Fayette, LA; four step-children, Bruce Evans of Naples, Marsha (Larry) Mason of Englewood, FL, Mary Ann Walters of Ft. White, FL and Linda Villani of Naples; six step-grandsons, one stepgreat -grand daughter; and several nieces; and nephews. 



Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home at Naples Memorial Gardens, 525 111th AVE N, Naples. 



The Funeral Service for Philip will take place on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the same location. 



Following his burial, there will be a Celebration of Life Reception held at the Royal Palm Country Club, 405 Forest Hills Blvd, Naples. 



Philip was a gentle, quiet and kind gentleman. He loved being on the water, whether fishing, swimming or boating. He liked to help folks in his quiet ways. He and Mary enjoyed their 28 years together. They traveled the world by plane and ship, as well as the United States, by car. 



Phil attended schools in Tyler, going on to the University of Texas where he received his BS as a Petroleum Engineer, in 1941. He retired from Exxon Corp. Overseas. 



During WWII, Phil was in the 8th Air Force, as a Captain, where he spent four years, half of which he was in England, from mid'43 to mid-'45, during the height of the war. He was stationed at 3rd Air Division Headquarters in England at Elveden Hall as junior staff officer on General Curtis Lemay's staff and later assigned to the 100th Bomb Group at Thorpe Abbots, England as Group Technical Inspector. After WWII he spent about 12 years in the AF Reserve, inactive. After the war, he did Petroleum Reservoir Research for five years for the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the Rocky Mountain area. He was stationed in Laramie, Wyoming on the University of Wyoming campus. He enjoyed living in this area with the availability of skiing, fly fishing and hunting. 



Phil then worked for an Exxon subsidiary company, International Petroleum. While the headquarters was in Coral Gables, FL, most of his career as a Petroleum Engineer was in Colombia and Peru for the Coral Gables Company. He was the Chief Petroleum Engineer for the company in Colombia. He retired after 20 years, with the last three years in Iran as head of Operations Research, which involved solving petroleum field development, producing and shipping problems with centralized IBM mainframe computers. 



He was a Life member of Society of Petroleum Engineers with Legion of Honor awarded in 2000. He was a Registered Professional Petroleum Engineer, State of Texas, as of 1948; now retired. He was also a member of Tau Beta Pi, honorary engineering society. 



Philip was a past member ('77-'81) of the Marco Island Rotary Club (and elected Secretary) but retired at the death of his first wife, in 1981. 



For 21 years, Phil was an active member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Marco Island Flotilla 95. He was active in on-thewater operations, SAR, Safety Patrols and taught Public Boating Safety and Navigation courses. For nine years of the tour, he was on the National Staff of this organization, along with his wife, Mary. For three years he was Editor of their national publication THE NAVIGATOR, which had circulation of about 40,000 copies. This position was equivalent to maritime military rank of full Commander. He retired from the Auxiliary in 1998. 



Phil was a past member of the Marco Bay Yacht Club and SW FL Exxon Annuitants Association. He also belonged to the 8th Air Force Historical Society, Mighty Eighth Air Force Historical Museum Society, 100th Bomb Group Association, The Conservancy, and Naples Historical Society. He was a past member of the Laramie, Wyoming Elks and American Legion. 



Philip enjoyed a full and active life. Now he may rest in peace. 



In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 93 in Naples, or Flotilla 95 in Marco.
