James J. O'Brien, 81, of Maiden Street, Cranston, a sales manager, died December 10, 2002, at Kent County Memorial Hospital. He was the companion of Lorraine C. Cooney of Cranston and the husband of the late Lucy (Ricciuti) O'Brien.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Martin and Julia (Gallagher) O'Brien, he had been a Cranston resident for 35 years.
Mr. O'Brien was a sales manager at H.B. Alarms in Cranston for 20 years and had previously been employed as a chef for Murphy's Caterers for 35 years.
He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant.
Mr. O'Brien was a communicant of St. Matthew Church.
He leaves three daughters, Kathryn J. Ancone of Cranston and Deborah A. Highet and Maureen E. Canzone, both of North Providence; three sons, James J. O'Brien Jr. of North Kingstown, Richard O'Brien of Cranston and Michael M. O'Brien of Warwick; two brothers, Martin M. O'Brien of Narragansett and Raymond O'Brien of Warwick; a sister, Marie K. O'Brien of Warwick; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held from Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave., Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Matthew Church, Elmwood Avenue, Cranston. Burial with military honors was in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA 02155-6084 would be appreciated.
