"I will attempt to get the info you requested.  As you

can see, they arrived right at the end of the war. 

They flew possibly one combat mission and my

grandfather remembers firing at a German Me 262 or

maybe one of their rocket/glider planes (was that a

Heinkel 163?).  I have forgotten a lot of my German

plane trivia.  He said they were so fast, he could not

draw a bead on them.  The rest of the missions were

milk runs.  He said they had a crew photo taken in

Texas.  He thinks he still has it.  Also, he said he

was late for a training flight in Florida once and

missed his plane.  The plane went down with no

survivors.  I will try to get specifics.

He said it (crew photo) was taken in Florida during

training.  He said he was in a B-17 during a belly

landing in Florida.  There was smoke in the flightdeck

area immediately after take off, so the pilot got

permission to land.  He said the pilot forgot to lower

the gear during the excitement and bellied in on the

paved runway throwing a shower of sparks.  He said my

grandmother had sent him a cake which he and the crew

had planned to eat during the 10 hour flight.  After

the landing, he and the rest of the crew had to get

checked for injuries and someone took his cake.  It

seems he experienced all his close calls in Florida

rather than Eurpoe.  If you recall, I had mentioned

that he missed a training flight in FLA which crashed."
