Mr. George arrived at Thorpe Abbotts,349th BS on 18 Feb,1945 with the 2nd Lt. Ralph K. Litaker crew as the TTE (top Turret-Engineer)
Crew flew approx 22 combat missions until the end of hostilities as well as food drops to the Dutch people on the May,1945 Chowhound missions,also POW ferry missions,troop ferry missions.
James B. George, better known as "Jim", was born November 2, 1922, on a ranch in Union County, New Mexico, to Dennis Lonnie George and Exie Victoria Ingram George. He died at the Texas Veterans Home in Big Spring on Tuesday, April 5, 2011. Jim attended schools in McKinney and Hillsboro, Texas, and graduated from Waco High School in 1940. He then attended Texas A&M, before enlisting in the Army Air Corp as an aviation cadet in 1942. During the war, he flew 25 missions on a B-17 with the 100th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force. After the war he spent most of his life as a representative for various manufacturing companies. Upon his retirement from that field, he became a real estate broker in Ruidoso, NM. While living there, he met Jane, and they were married in 1983. After moving to Midland in 1987, Jim joined forces with MOHRE and volunteered his time helping them promote the Midland/Odessa area to prospective retirees. He also volunteered his teaching talents to the College Classics program teaching a business course. In the early 90's, he was employed as a manager for Holiday Retirement Corp., and he and Jane worked together as marketing managers throughout the entire construction phase of Polo Park Estates Retirement Home. Retiring from that position in 1995, he later became property manager for Midland Rentals. Jim was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity, the Permian Basin Stamp Club, and the Midland Genealogical Society. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. He is survived by his wife, Jane of Midland; her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Rick Shirley; their two sons, Steven and John, all of Dallas; her son, Chris Barteet of Eunice, NM; a granddaughter, Catherine Lopez and her mother, Magda George of West Palm Beach, FL; one aunt, Artelle Stiff of McKinney, TX; three nieces, Vicki Stephenson and her husband, John, Darnell Wedel and her husband, Jim, and Tara Miller and her husband, Mark. Graveside rites and interment will be held at the Pecan Grove Cemetery in McKinney, TX. Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
