3) Frank Hemmen stories



a) Told by me by Frank himself. He once slugged his pilot to take control 

of the aircraft. My foggy recollection was that Frank aborted a takeoff. I 

never had further context, except a story from possibly the same event. One 

of his children said that Frank had done the appropriate thing when not 

doing what the pilot wanted. Perhaps he and the pilot knew each other well 

enough that Frank wasn't brought up on charges. Perhaps the CO was 

flying and Frank was watching instruments and saw something the pilot 

missed. I'll never know. By the time I knew Frank better (1970's), he could 

have an impetuous side.



b) Told to me by Frank himself. They were flying along, on what I presume 

was a ferry mission, that sounded like it was over water. One of the crew in 

the back spotted some sort of landmark. Frank turned the plane in 

that direction, at which point the pilot turned to him and said "you've 

got five minutes". It turned out that the turn was the right move to 

make. I take it for granted that such a discretionary turn would not happen 

as part of a standard combat aircraft formation.



c) Second hand story: He reportedly rolled a B-17 in training, which you 

weren't supposed to do. I don't doubt that such a positive-g roll is feasible, 

if the aircraft was not too heavily loaded, but you would know better than 



d) Second hand story: On one mission, he elected to sit on his flak jacket 

rather than wear it. The seated flak jacket intercepted shrapnel on that 

mission



e) Post WWII story told to me by Frank himself. (I'm told he was recalled to military service as a result of the Korean war.) He was slated to fly F-

86's. He was on a training missing, flying a P-51 as I understand it, when some sort of aircraft problem developed. He was trying to make the 

airfield, but realized he would not make it. He was too low to bail out (i.e. )not enough time to climb out of the cockpit). Instead, he released his seatbelt and rolled the airplane so he would fall out. As told by one of my cousins, he was low enough that he was knocked out or somewhat injured by the event. What must've been shortly afterwards, he resigned his commission. He told me that his CO was not happy at all about that 

resignation. (Frank and his wife had three children by then, the oldest probably 5 or 6 years old. Having a young family was one of the big reasons he resigned.
