Comments: My dad was a person who never got over being a POW. It cost him a career and in a way cost him a family life. He suffered from PTSD and did nothing to get over it.

Earl Benjamin Rutherford FREMONT, California Earl Benjamin Rutherford, a native of Big Stone Gap, Virginia and longtime Fremont resident, passed away from cancer on May 19, 2010, with his family by his side at the age of 87. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, May 28th, at Berge-Pappas-Smith Chapel of the Angels, in Fremont, California, at 11:00 AM. Inurnment at Chapel of the Chimes Cemetery in Hayward will occur at a later date. Earl was born February 14, 1923, in Big Stone Gap, Virginia to Minnie and Carl Rutherford. He was a S/Sgt in World War II and served in the Army Air Corp., as a waist gunner in a B-17 Bomber. He was shot down on February 10, 1944 on his 10th Mission over Germany where he then became a prisoner of war for 18 months. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Bob and William Rutherford, Elsie Birt and his loving wife Marion. His surviving love ones include his daughter Erlana Rutherford (Karen Callaghan) of Fremont; stepchildren, Linda Cullen (Brad Duffey), Ron Mundy (Shelly), Kathy Paulson (Ken), Andra Giachino (Ralph Misitano), Mark Giachino (Amy); sister, Wanda Fulkerson, numerous nieces, nephews and loving pets, Nani, Koa, and Honu.
