EYEWITNESS:  "A/C #829 was hit by flak over the target. Bombs were dropped; then the aircraft fell back

amoung the stragglers and was not seen again." 



Statement by Lt. Petrdil indicates that all nine members of the crew abandoned the ship about 30 miles west of Merseburg. The only apparent injury was a fractured foot suffered by Lt. MacAllister hitting the ground. They were leading the high squadron on this day. Crew, with the exception of T/Sgt Edward D. Lowther from the J.M. Shelly crew, had joined the 100th on 25 May 1944. (They found the 100th despondent over the loss of 9 crews at Berlin the day before ,24 May 44) Lowther was flying in place of the crew's regular TTE, T/Sgt Carlos E. McCutcheon who went on to complete his tour.

This appears to have been a "Pick - Up" crew.  A/C 42-31537 LN-S "Randie Lou"  Plane was named by Lt Randell Chadwick after his Daughter (she was named after Randell and his Wife Louise "Randie Lou")

 

Lt Dykeman, T/Sgt Arnold, Buschmeier and Spragg were from Lt John P.Gibbons crew. O'Donnell from Lt J.M.Shelly crew and of course Fitzroy was the original co-pilot of the Randel T. Chadwick crew when it joined the 100th on 24 Feb 1944.  



On July 29, 1944, for the second day in a row, B-17's set out for the oil plant at Merseburg.  The formation was led by 1st Lt Herbert Howard and Austin Dunlap on a faulty course which went over Leipzig.  The 100th "A" Group followed the 390th BG.  The formation flew on a southernly course towards Merseburg and was hit in a barrage of extremely heavy flak.  In the next few minutes, the low squadron of the 100th Lead was hard hit, losing 5 of 6 B-17's. Crew members believe FW 190's and ME 109's wee radioing the formations altitude while flying in their own flak.  The "A" Group dropped wide, "B" Group hit the target.  The entire low squadron of the 100th "A" Group failed to return.  There was a 6 8/10th's cloud cover at the target.  The lead A/C was hit by flak before the target causing a formation breakup and many stragglers.  All were presumable lost to enemy fighters after passing over targets of opportunity. Witnesses: Lt Kasselbaum and Lt George Allen reported Lt Fitzroy's A/C blowing up after being hit.  German records indicate that 5 bodies were recovered.



EYEWITNESS:  "No specific information concerning the loss of this A/C is available. The formation leader for this squadron suffered flak damage prior to the target and was forced to jettison his bombs. This may have led to the beaking up of the formation for all became more of less stragglers. All were lost, presumaby to E/A after passing over the target of opportunity."

Hartman's statement  also indicates S/Sgt Carmine V. Roberto was killed before the crew bailed out over Leipzig at approx. 1045 hours.  Lt Fitzroy stated that he had seen 12 Americans Hanged and shot by Germans on the 29th of July, 1944.  Lt Dykeman, T/Sgt Douglas and T/Sgt Ira Arnold  were among them

"Lt Shelly was injured on D-Day in the face around the eyes, hit by flak over the target-didn't think he would be OK, was grounded until August 24, 1944….. Lt Fayette, our Bombardier, was shot in the front of the plane on July 17th Mission to Auxerre.  Bates left his station and put his hands in this chest, Fayette was hit by flak over the target, finished mission and was taken away in an ambulance…..

Sgt Bates went on to fly a second tour of duty in the 12th Air Force in B-25's.  He flew 31 missions in B-25's (out of Italy and Corsica) from January 1945 until the end of the war…." from Sgt Winkler.

Thanks for the quick response.  My grandfather (Lt Michael Spiller) is visiting me right now, and

has a copy of his mission list at home in Texas, so maybe I should have him

send me a copy that I could forward to you.  Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure

that he doesn't have a crew photo because I would have seen it by now. I

know he flew his first mission with a crew that was on their 25th mission

and it was to Berlin.   I also know that he flew a "secret mission" to drop

supplies to the French Resistance around Tulle because I went with him and a

few other vets for a celebration in '94.  It was a fantastic welcome by the

French.  They explained how critical the supplies were because 2 days before

the drop the SS had punished the region for Resistance activities by

executing 100 men chosen at random.  They put the armaments to good use and

ended up being the only region of France to liberate itself without any

Allied presence.  They had to because the Allies were bypassing that part of

France and took a few months to establish a strong presence there.

Michael Spiller  



Michael Winbury Spiller, 89, died Tuesday, November 9, 2010. He was born March 27, 1921, in Quanah, Texas, to R. H. and Pearl Winbury Spiller. He attended Stephen F. Austin State Teacher’s College and The University of Texas, departing to serve in World War II. He was a B-17 navigator, flying 35 missions in the “Bloody Hundredth” Bomb Group stationed at Thorpe Abbotts, England. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters for outstanding service.

Upon returning from the war, he proposed to his first grade sweetheart, Marjorie Ann Cope. They were wed on January 6, 1945, in Lubbock, Texas, and raised their family in Wichita Falls. They were married for 46 years until her death in 1992.

He retired from the Texas Highway Department in 1986 after 30 years in civil engineering. He was an Elder Emeritus at First Christian Church, President of Wichita Falls Kiwanis Club, a volunteer for Interfaith Ministries, and a long-time board member and advocate of the North Texas Rehabilitation Center. On March 31, 2009, he was honored at the “Lunch with the Legends” at Sheppard Air Force Base.

Mike was a talented wood worker, wood carver, and jewelry maker. He was affectionately called “Big Mike” and was known for his firm handshake and warm hugs.

On December 13, 2003, Mike married Susan Earhart Wadsack at First Christian Church. They shared great love and happiness during the last seven years of his life. He is survived by his wife, Susan; daughter Susan Spiller Culbertson and husband Joe, son Michael W. Spiller, Jr. and wife Diane; stepchildren Charles Wadsack and wife Patty, Patricia Templer and husband Rod, Deborah Steed and husband Dave Finholt, Christian Steed and wife Carol Andrews; grandchildren Joe Culbertson, Jr. and wife Kathryn, Courtney Culbeck and husband Darsie, Michael Spiller III and wife Sally, and James Spiller and fiancée Rachel Broek.

He is also survived by nine step grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers R.H. Spiller, Jr. and H.B. Spiller, as well as wives Helen Speed Spiller and Sealy Steed Wolf Spiller.

The family wishes to express appreciation to the caregivers at The Gables and Hospice for their loving care.





A Service of Celebration will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 13, 2010, at First Christian Church, with Dr. David Hartman officiating. The burial will be at Crestview Memorial Park following the service. The family will receive friends at Lunn’s Colonial Funeral Home from 6 – 7 p.m. on Friday, November 12, 2010.
