Marion R. "Buck" Calton,86

Born 10 January,1925

Died 1 May,2011 at home in Cassville,Missouri.



Mr. Calton arrived at Thorpe Abbotts as the TG on the Capt, Lee S. Jacobs crew 5 Jan,1945. The crew completed 27 combat missions, several Chowhound food drop missions to Holland in May,1945 as well as ferry missions. FEH



Marion “Buck” Calton of Cassville, Missouri, passed away on May 1, 2011 at his home. Mr. Calton, the son of Marion Elby and Ethel Roberta Calton, was born in Barry County, at “Tom Town”, south of Verona, Missouri on January 10, 1925. After graduating from Verona High School he was inducted into the Army where he became a member of the Eight Air Force, 100th Bomb Group stationed in England. He took part in 27 bombing missions over Germany as a tail gunner on a B-17 bomber. At war's end, he was discharged and returned to his home, where he worked a short time with his father. In the fall of 1946, he enrolled at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, now known as the University of Missouri at Rolla. While in college, he married Margaret "Peggy" Carey, on Christmas day, in 1947 at the Kings Prairie Methodist Church. After graduating college in 1950, with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Buck was employed with Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria, Illinois. During his career at Caterpillar, he worked as a Research Engineer, Project Engineer, and Supervising Engineer. He was involved in materials research, material selection, failure analysis, welding, and he also spent some time in the Tire Development Department. He holds several patents in welding. After retiring from Caterpillar in 1980, he and Peggy moved back to Barry County. They purchased property near Washburn where they raised a few cattle, hogs, chickens, and kept a large garden and orchard. In 1991 they sold the property and moved to Cassville where they continued to raise a large garden and various fruit trees. Together they were avid golfers and took part in many organizations such as the American Legion, The Golden Harvest Club, The Ozark Festival Orchestra, Barry County Museum, and most recently played with the Republic Community Band. Marion also loved to play in brass quintets and sextets. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Margaret "Peggy" Calton, of Cassville, Missouri; two sons, David Calton, and his wife, Judy, of Detroit, Michigan, and Douglas Calton, and his wife, Barbara, of Cincinnati Ohio; three brothers, Kenneth Calton, of Green Forest, Arkansas, Robert Calton, of Aurora, Missouri, and Thomas Calton, of Knoxville, Tennessee; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Calvin Calton, one half-brother, and two half-sisters. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of White Funeral Home and Crematory of Cassville and no formal services are scheduled; however, his beloved wife, Peggy, will welcome friends and neighbors to drop by after 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at their home to express their condolences and best wishes.
