MESSAGE: First Lieutenant Eric M. Campbell, Dad -- navigator in the 418th (see Captain John Fabian, Jr, crew photo) -- died on Jan 8 after two years of failing health and advancing Alzheimer's. We placed his ashes in the Arlington columbarium on April 30. Mom, my sister and I were there, along with a dozen other relatives. His urn is in Court #8.

Hello mpfaley,

 

My father, Lt. Eric M. Campbell (navigator) flew 35 missions with the 100th between August 1944 and January '45.

He did not like to talk about the war, and kept very few souvenirs, but among them is his Lucky Bastardes Club certificate.

I have found other versions of the certificate on the Internet, but none as clever and elaborate as this one. 

Whoever wrote it had a terrific sense of humor, and a pretty good grasp pf archaic English.

 

I have attached a PDF of the certificate and a transcription of the text.

The original is framed & hangs in my office.

It occurs to me that some day, this document should be in a museum of some sort.

Ditto, Dad's combat map: he noted every mission by date, destination and conditions.

Examples (with Dad's shaky spelling) :

I have that in a frame, too.

If you can advise me as to a possible permanent home for these items, I would appreciate it.

I have no heirs and do not want them to windup in an estate auction.

 

By the way, Dad died in January of 2007 and we took his ashes to Arlington in May of that year.

Thanks for the quick response, and for your interest in Dad's certificate & map.

And, thanks for pointing out that that is chaff under the wax seal on the Luckye Bastardes certificate.

I suppose you saw that the wax was embossed with a wings & prop lapel pin.

 

I am happy to provide details from Dad's map.

 

It is 43 X 32, red ink on cream paper (may have been white long ago), with this header:

PLOTTING SERIES EDITION OF JUNE 1944 WESTERN GERMANY SHEET N.W. 48/1

Dad printed a little personal information across the top, including his serial number & rank and "100th Bomb Group 54 Squadron"

I have attached the mission notes in a Word document; I copied his spelling and grammar to the letter.

 

Dad was a dirt-poor Alabama farm-boy who really did walk barefoot to school, and his family lived on what they raised on the farm, which was maybe 10 miles north of the Florida border.

He was studying engineering at Auburn when he went into the service, and said he barely made it through navigator training, as he was not into advanced college classes yet. After the war, he finished up at Auburn, then worked as an industrial engineer until he retired.

 

By the way, the 9th and 18th missions are worth a second look.

Dad's observations are so understated.
