AN EIGHTH AAF BOMBER COMMAND STATION, England — He used to be in the greeting card business in New York and Christmas season always meant a terrific increase in business.
Nowadays Sgt. James J. Daly goes into the air as right waist gunner in a Flying Fortress with several thousand lethal little .50 caliber greetings for Nazi fighting planes strung on the ammunition belts which ring around him at his post.
And just as in peace time, the sergeant finds that the Christmas season in England is a busy one for him, what with the stepped-up tempo of the Eighth Air Force’s bombing assaults on Nazi Europe.
"The better the day the better the deed” is the sergeant’s motto as he grooms his Browning and sees to it that the nickel steel “greetings” are scientifically loaded in the belts.
Sgt. Daly is the son of William and Kathleen Daly, of 2242 Valentine Ave., the Bronx, N.Y. He worked for the Norcross company, at 244 Madison ave., N.Y., before volunteering a year ago last October. He is 19 years old.
