Biography

Birthplace: Bayonne, NJ
At a young age, Mr Nelson piloted a round-trip, transcontinental flight in a single-engine airplane during the 1930’s. He was an Army Air Corps 2nd lieutenant with the 8th Air Force 100th Bomb Group during World War II and piloted nine missions out of Thorpe Abbotts Airfield in England over Germany in a B-17 bomber. He spent 18 months as a prisoner of war in Germany.

418th Sqdn. Crew, as above joined 100th on 1 Dec 43 and flew its first misson 31 Dec 43. They were on their ninth mission on 4 Feb 44 to Frankfurt.

Report pieced together from MACR: A/C struck ground near Maunchen Gladbach. All crew members in A/C for the crash landing --
there were no injuries. All survived and were returned to the U.SA. after VE Day.

Eyewitness: "A/C #758 filled in as #3 in the 2nd element of the lead squadron. It was in position when we were over the
target, but soon thereafter began to lag behind. At 1227 hours it pulled away to the right near
Wiesbaden and began to lose altitiude slowly. Was last seen on heading of 330 degrees, still losing
altitude, but under control..No chutes were observed..
