Bill’s body was found on May 17 1945 on the Island of Norderney. He was repatriated in 1949 and interred at Forest Lawn cemetery in Los Angeles.

lost another. A/C was subjected to intense flak over Bremerhaven and was last seen over Spiekeroog
island, 5345N 0743E."

On the mission to Hamburg on December 31, 1944, Lt Mayo was flying in the "B" Squadron, Low flight, last aircraft. At 12:25 pm William Mayo who had fallen out of formation and was jumped by fighters. Lt Mayo called on VHF over Bremenhaven at 13,000 feet in heavy flak with two engines out"
